Direct X 8.0 Not Installed

Just bought the complete pack on steam in the sale. Tried to fire up the first game to beat it again and it throws up a DirectX 8 error. My DxDiag says it has DirectX11 and I have tried to install the version that comes on the game disc (I have all the Runaway games on DVD) also tried from the internet 8.0, 8.1, 9.0c. I beat the original game from the DVD version on this computer ages ago so I know it can work.
